Do you fear the LORD

Fear

In Proverbs, there is a reoccurring theme that the fear of the Lord is required for life. Here are just a few examples.

Proverbs: 19:23 The fear of the Lord leads to life, So that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil.”

Proverbs 22:4 The reward of humility and the fear of the Lord Are riches, honor and life.

And existence without the Lord is associated with death.

Proverbs 11:19 He who is steadfast in righteousness will attain to life, And he who pursues evil will bring about his own death.

Proverbs 16:25 There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.

Sometimes, I feel like this should be easy to understand. By all means, life would not have happened without the Creator. So it should stand to reason that if you fear the Lord that He would be likely to bless you with a good life.

The difficultly for me is that I seem to complicate the fear of the Lord. I believe that fearing the Lord is not hiding in the closet, because the Lord might get me. Rather, it should be “Lord, you are so great, that I cannot do anything else rather than worship you.”

Too often, I put God in my own little box. I don’t do it, because I intend to belittle God. I put God in my own little box, because it is easier for me to understand God in my little box. I have created a way for me to provide for my own needs and wants. I even have a friend everywhere I go. The trouble is that this description is just a shadow of the true and living God. It is easier for me to keep believing what I have always believed about God even if those beliefs are not totally correct.

One thing I have learned in the last year is, what is easier generally isn’t better. If I want the better life God wants be to have, I am going to have to get rid of my small ideas about God and actually see God. This process causes fear, but I trust God to use that fear to make me better.

Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Psalms 111:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments; His praise endures forever.

You must fear the Lord to understand the Lord, because it is impossible to give the Lord the glory He deserves without knowing His greatness. When you understand His greatness, it will probably cause some fear, and that it expected. Trust God in spite of that fear, because God wants to give you the abundant life that He has promised. Be aware that this abundant life is not going to be easy, but easy isn’t better.

How is God calling you to fear him more than other fears?
