In last week’s post, we discussed that the fear of the Lord, although scary, is worth pursuing because of the life that God wants to give to those who fear him. This abundant life is described as one where you are able to sleep without worry, full of riches and honor and full of wisdom.
There is a great connection between the fear of the Lord and wisdom, because the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and wisdom will enable you to discern the fear of the Lord.
- Proverbs 10:9 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (NASB)
- Proverbs 2:1-5 My son, if you will receive my words and treasure my commandments within you, make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding; for if you cry for discernment, lift your voice for understanding; if you seek her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will discern the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God. (NASB)
If the fear of the Lord starts a process of becoming wiser, and becoming wiser will help you to discern the fear of the Lord; you might begin to believe that this is an easy process. By all means, Proverbs 1:20-21 says, “Wisdom shouts in the street, she lifts her voice in the square; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the gates in the city she utters her sayings:” It is not like wisdom hides from us.
The problem is that wisdom isn’t the only thing shouting for our attention.
- Proverbs 9: 13-15 The woman of folly is boisterous, She is naive and knows nothing. She sits at the doorway of her house, on a seat by the high places of the city, calling to those who pass by, who are making their paths straight: (NASB)
In order to become wise, you must ignore the other voices and focus on wisdom. You must ignore the lies of Satan.
- Proverbs 1:5 A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel,
We must learn to differentiate the voice of wisdom and the voice of folly. We cannot do that without the Lord. We need to be in His word and with His people. We need to value wisdom and make the effort to learn her ways. We must make her a priority.
In our busy world, it is easy to ignore the voice of wisdom. What you do need to change to value wisdom like Solomon did in Proverbs?
