I love watching my daughter growing and developing. A few weeks ago, we left her with my parents while we went on a mission trip. When we reunited, I was amazed at how her behavior and skills had changed in just one week. She is now speaking with more words. She can now use a fork or spoon to get food into her mouth. She can identify different parts of her body. She wants to know what is happening all the time.
The biggest difference, in my opinion, is that she is finding new ways to express her opinion. She now stands by the refrigeration and uses the sign for “milk” if she wants milk to drink (and she does want milk, rather than water or juice). She crawls into her highchair and signs “more” or if she is being lazy claps her hands when she wants to eat. When she wants to be on something that she cannot climb onto (like the bed or a chair out of her reach), she taps the surface and signs “please.” She also utilizes her ability to point and babble words to express desires that seem to be new.
The world is full of wonderful things to want and desire. As my daughter needs to learn, we cannot receive everything we want. As one of her parents, it is part of my job to teach her to trust me to take care of her needs.
This is what we see in Psalm 27. So much trust has been developed between God and David that all David really wants to do is be in the presence of God.
Psalms 27:4: One thing I ask of the Lord; this I seek: To dwell in the Lord’s house all the days of my life, To gaze on the Lord’s beauty, to visit his temple.
David understood that to receive all that he needs and many of his wants, he needs to be in the presence of God. And David asked for God’s direction over and over.
Psalms 25:4-5: Make known to me your ways, Lord; teach me your paths. Guide me by your fidelity and teach me, for you are God my savior, for you I wait all the day long.
And God protects David.
Psalms 27:5-6a: For God will hide me in his shelter in time of trouble, He will conceal me in the cover of his tent; and set me high upon a rock. Even now my head is held high above my enemies on every side!
If our desire is to be in the presence of God, He will provide everything we might need.
How do you pursue the presence of God?
